Band

Green Mountain High School offers a jazz band class that develops techniques for students playing brass, woodwind, percussion, keyboard, or string (guitar or bass) instruments. The GMHS jazz band class focuses primarily on contemporary, stage band literature styles, such as traditional jazz, Latin, and rock. Jazz improvisation is introduced and developed. Guest jazz artists are brought in on occasion to offer their expertise. The group called Jazz Spectrum includes all students enrolled in the GMHS jazz band class. A second group, called Jazz Spectrum II, is currently inactive. Jazz Spectrum performs in at least four school concerts per year and participates in jazz festivals throughout Colorado.

Students interested in enrolling in the GMHS jazz band class must contact the Green Mountain High School Director of Bands. Enrollment may be subject to an audition in the preceding spring semester and/or concurrent enrollment in another instrumental music class at Green Mountain High School.

Personal expenses for students in Jazz Spectrum include a class fee for each semester; black shirt, black pants, black belt, black socks, and black shoes for performances; instrument rental/purchase; and instrument repair and maintenance costs. Green Mountain High School has a limited number of certain instruments available to rent. Please contact the Director of Bands before signing a rental contract or investing in an instrument purchase.

Two Concert Band classes are offered at Green Mountain High School in order to develop students‘ technique for playing brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments and covers a variety of band literature styles, primarily for concert performances. The GMHS Concert Band typically performs in four school concerts per year. The GMHS Symphonic Band is open to all GMHS students. Placement in the more advanced Wind Ensemble class is based on student ability. The Green Mountain High School Director of Bands holds auditions in December.

Marching band is intended to develop students‘ technique for playing brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments and cover appropriate marching band literature styles, primarily for marching performances. The Green Mountain High School Marching Rams include student musicians and the GMHS Color Guard.

The Green Mountain High School Marching Rams demonstrate excellence both on and off the field and have been consistent top competitors, earning many marching titles at local and regional competitions. They were Colorado State Marching Band Finalists 27 years in a row, the longest consecutive streak in the state! The GMHS Marching Rams have been State Marching Band Champions 2 times and Regional Marching Band Champions 15 times. In 2014 and 2015, they took 3rd place at the Colorado State Marching Band Championships.

The Marching Rams currently compete in the Colorado Bandmasters Association's class 3A. Information about the CBA's class assignments, judging information and rules, marching festival results, and the state regional and championship events is posted at www.cbamarching.com.

The Marching Rams start rehearsing June. In the fall, they rehearse after school twice a week and on Saturdays. They perform in the homecoming parade and at home varsity football games and they compete in up to 5 marching contests during the fall. The Marching Rams program is open to all students.

Color Guard develops students' dance, movement, and use of flags and other equipment (rifles, sabers, etc.) in conjunction with a marching band. Developing the techniques of choreographed movement to the music is a prime focus. Dance is a primary component of the Color Guard and techniques from ballet, jazz, and tap will be taught.

The Green Mountain High School Color Guard, together with the student musicians in the Green Mountain High School Marching Rams, demonstrate excellence both on and off the field and have been consistent top competitors, earning many marching titles at local and regional competitions. They perform in the homecoming parade and during half-time at all of the home, varsity football games, and they compete in up to 7 marching contests during the fall.

The GMHS Color Guard practices weekly throughout summer. In the fall, they rehearse after school twice a week and on Saturdays. The group is open to all students, regardless of experience.
